View Full Version : Upgrading the Audio in my Ram

So far I have only done a few "minor" mods to the truck, but much more planned of course. Deadened the inner and outer skins of the front doors, modified the speaker cutouts to accept 8" midbass, added dash speakers, will be building an amp rack for under the rear seat, and a custom center console to house the subwoofer. Here's some pics of work so far:

Replaced these:

With these:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0705.jpg

The doors all sealed up with the ed EHQS 8" installed:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0710.jpg

Dayton RS100 4" installed in the dash (used plastic cutting boards to them, sealed that to the dash):

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0702.jpg

Pretty beefy for a 4" speaker:

The Cadence amps for the project, a TXA3002 and TXA3004:

Here she is getting torn apart and put back together:

Some pictures of one of the subs in my stable (the DIYMA R12):

http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/19/l_f44886c64d384c129c02a811cdb8b2ae.jpg

Any suggestions? I am still undecided on a subwoofer. The DIYMA is a beast for sure, but is more towards sound quality and isn't designed for "showing off".

great upgrade! :D i would say go with quality but thats just me, what do u like the most?

chithead
10-10-2009, 01:54 AM
To be honest, I am enjoying the clarity the other speakers installed provide. The thrill of bass is always alluring, but how often can one really get to show it off without annoying everyone around you?

If the DIYMA sub is used, then it will be down-firing under the center console. If a beefier sub is picked, then there is a completely wild console floating around in my head.

Looking good!unless you want mega spl I would stay with those subs.they will sound sweet and still be loud.I ran alpine 15s in my comp.honda I had.it would only hit 113db but sound awsome and was still loud.I have started putting money down and I am in the planning stages of comp system for the charger.hertz subs audison amps and bit one with the audison thesis line midbass mids and highs.

Installed some amps this weekend for tuning purposes. Dug out an old Earthquake crossover and may be adding more speakers now. Got the perfect spot for some 4" mids right in the kick panels. Even considering tweeters again after I crossed those off the list since the 3" full range in the dash covers quite a bit.

Decided to go with the DIYMA R12 for now. Planning on a full center console coming out of the dash and filling up the space between the front seats. Will relocate the cupholders and armrest, and try to keep the storage inside of it.

Well, yanked it all back out. Going to start over with a new plan. Hoped to keep it simple, but sounds like we are going for a full three way up front with sub mounted in the center console. Should be interesting to say the least.

Got it all figured out now (hopefully). These arrived the other day:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1036.jpg

Dayton DA175-8 7" Aluminum Cone Woofers. Very good detail for that midbass that was lacking.

Just a sneak peak of what will be going into the Ram soon:

DIYMA R12 12" subwoofer
Dayton DA175-8 7" woofer
Dayton RS100S-8 4" full range
Vifa BC25SC06-04 1" tweeters

Going to need some help on the next part. Trying to come up with a unique amp rack for under the rear seat. Wanting to incorporate some sort of design in it as well. Something with Mopar, Music, and Thundercats if possible. Any thoughts?

Can you post some pics of the amps.Maybe some of under the seat.

chithead
11-18-2009, 12:45 PM
Certainly!

They are a Cadence TXA3002 and TXA3004. Also have an Earthquake CR-620 crossover but I think it will hide under the rack with an access panel. I'll try to get better pictures, but here's some I took a few months ago:

You are putting all this under the back seat area? Are you wanting it all to be hidden?

chithead
11-19-2009, 02:10 AM
Yes everything will be hidden. The subs are going in a center console. Just the amps and crossover under the rear seat.

chithead
11-19-2009, 12:25 PM
Came up with one idea yesterday. Something to mimic this attached design. Thinking the amps will be on each side of the emblem, but there will be edges going up from one end of the amp to the other. Rising almost 3/4" to the center emblem. Then thinking of either a custom Thundercats that lights up, or using one of the Ram Tailgate badges from the 2009 Ram. They are almost 6" tall and would fill up that space nicely.

v666
11-20-2009, 02:00 AM
I like the thundercat idea.having it made into plexiglass with back lighting.then again put the rams head on top with lighting under it.you should see this nissan truck that belongs to one of the installers at the shop i go to.he has his amps molded into the truck doors.you would swear it came that way.if you put your amps under plexi you should put you some exhaust fans in the amp rack.

chithead
11-20-2009, 12:15 PM
No I definitely don't want the amps under anything. Actually hoping to have them exposed about a 1/4" on one end, and flush on the other. It should be interesting to say the least.

And installed:

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1071.jpg

ZERO issues with the door panel hitting. Had some rubbing with the 8" I installed previously. These have more impact with drums, and more detail with bass guitar and piano. The subwoofer will take care of what little bass that the 8" provided.

It is simply stunning. Hard to describe the sound it produces. Been listening to a JL Audio 10W3 for about a week now... I like the ability to "show-off" with it, but it definitely does not have that natural bass reproduction like the DIYMA. Looking into a new project though... rebuilding a subwoofer I have laying around the office here. Let's just say it is also by JL, but has the number 7 in it ;)

Houston, we had a problem.

But it's fixed. Hoprefully. Got the top plate secured to the motor finally. Took three of us armed with two screwdrivers each to pry that thing into position. VERY strong magnet! Got the basket on, lined up everything, and no go. Coils started reading between 14 and 332 ohms! Finally got that fixed, but still couldn't line up the coil properly. Ended up having to cut the cone to properly align it, and she works! Moves up and down anyways... now to get a dustcap. Maybe I can put the Ram or Mopar logo on it for that ultra custom look.

chithead
12-21-2009, 01:07 PM

Wasn't sure if I updated this thread, and I hadn't.

Plans changed BIG time. Have gone with a set of Rainbow Germanium components, a Focal 33A 13" subwoofer, Soundstream TRA Tarantula amps powering the components and the sub, and a yet to be determined head unit going in. Going to be one massive undertaking, but should definitely make quite an impact.

Sucks I couldn't get any of it in before Gatty... but there is always next year.

No, I don't believe it was cheaper lol. What kind of HU are you looking for. I have an Eclipse 7100 that I'm loving. It has 8v pre-outs. The 7200mk is out that from what I hear, is much nicer. The only negative things I've heard out of Eclipse HUs are the UI isn't the most intuitive.

Yes sir! The Rainbows and Focal sub were almost $35 cheaper than the Boston subs and components. And I am loving them much better!
