View Full Version : Upgrading the Audio in my Ram
chithead 10-09-2009, 01:09 PM So far I have only done a few "minor" mods to the truck, but much more planned of course. Deadened the inner and outer skins of the front doors, modified the speaker cutouts to accept 8" midbass, added dash speakers, will be building an amp rack for under the rear seat, and a custom center console to house the subwoofer. Here's some pics of work so far:
Replaced these:

With these:

The doors all sealed up with the ed EHQS 8" installed:

Dayton RS100 4" installed in the dash (used plastic cutting boards to them, sealed that to the dash):

Pretty beefy for a 4" speaker:

Here she is getting torn apart and put back together:

Some pictures of one of the subs in my stable (the DIYMA R12):

Any suggestions? I am still undecided on a subwoofer. The DIYMA is a beast for sure, but is more towards sound quality and isn't designed for "showing off".
RedInfierno 10-10-2009, 01:33 AM great upgrade! :D i would say go with quality but thats just me, what do u like the most?
chithead 10-10-2009, 01:54 AM To be honest, I am enjoying the clarity the other speakers installed provide. The thrill of bass is always alluring, but how often can one really get to show it off without annoying everyone around you?
If the DIYMA sub is used, then it will be down-firing under the center console. If a beefier sub is picked, then there is a completely wild console floating around in my head.
RedInfierno 10-10-2009, 01:57 AM whatever you decide doing please keep us posted bro!
NOTPAID4 10-10-2009, 02:07 AM Looking good! I like a little sound myself and the older I get the LOUDER I NEED IT ~ LOL
chithead 10-10-2009, 02:42 AM I sure will. Wasn't sure if there was much enthusiasm for audio upgrades. I didn't see many posts about the subject.
RedInfierno 10-10-2009, 02:44 AM I sure will. Wasn't sure if there was much enthusiasm for audio upgrades. I didn't see many posts about the subject.
go ahead and start your build up... people ill come right after once they get bitten by the AUDIO BUG u know? :D
Nolaboi86 10-10-2009, 03:49 AM Nice sound setup man u have to be able to JAM when u coming through with cars like ours!!!!
Revmarc 10-11-2009, 01:11 AM Nice! I'm sure that made a HUGE difference in sound!
BIGJAYREE 10-11-2009, 01:57 AM Looks great bet it sounds even better!
Looking good!unless you want mega spl I would stay with those subs.they will sound sweet and still be loud.I ran alpine 15s in my comp.honda I had.it would only hit 113db but sound awsome and was still loud.I have started putting money down and I am in the planning stages of comp system for the charger.hertz subs audison amps and bit one with the audison thesis line midbass mids and highs.
Texasfinest 10-13-2009, 04:51 PM Cool I have my system in my house just sittin there I need to install it but don't have time to rewire my car.
In my old stratus I was hitting 141.5 dbs.
Dang!I have always been a sound Q guy but love see and hear all the bass hitters!
chithead 10-16-2009, 01:50 AM Nice! I am still torn between trying to squeeze some heavy hitters in there or not.
chithead 10-29-2009, 01:20 PM Installed some amps this weekend for tuning purposes. Dug out an old Earthquake crossover and may be adding more speakers now. Got the perfect spot for some 4" mids right in the kick panels. Even considering tweeters again after I crossed those off the list since the 3" full range in the dash covers quite a bit.
Decided to go with the DIYMA R12 for now. Planning on a full center console coming out of the dash and filling up the space between the front seats. Will relocate the cupholders and armrest, and try to keep the storage inside of it.
Looking forward to seeing the pics of this!
chithead 11-06-2009, 11:43 PM Well, yanked it all back out. Going to start over with a new plan. Hoped to keep it simple, but sounds like we are going for a full three way up front with sub mounted in the center console. Should be interesting to say the least.
chithead 11-15-2009, 10:42 PM Got it all figured out now (hopefully). These arrived the other day:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1036.jpg
Dayton DA175-8 7" Aluminum Cone Woofers. Very good detail for that midbass that was lacking.
Just a sneak peak of what will be going into the Ram soon:
DIYMA R12 12" subwoofer
Dayton DA175-8 7" woofer
Dayton RS100S-8 4" full range
Vifa BC25SC06-04 1" tweeters
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1043.jpg
chithead 11-17-2009, 05:00 PM Going to need some help on the next part. Trying to come up with a unique amp rack for under the rear seat. Wanting to incorporate some sort of design in it as well. Something with Mopar, Music, and Thundercats if possible. Any thoughts?
Can you post some pics of the amps.Maybe some of under the seat.
chithead 11-18-2009, 12:45 PM Certainly!
They are a Cadence TXA3002 and TXA3004. Also have an Earthquake CR-620 crossover but I think it will hide under the rack with an access panel. I'll try to get better pictures, but here's some I took a few months ago:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0598.jpg
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0599.jpg
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0621.jpg
chithead 11-18-2009, 02:45 PM Also have a pair of these sitting at the house that aren't being used. Hooked them up the first time this weekend and was quite impressed with the output, but yet they were EXTREMELY clean.
Diamond Audio CM3 10"
NOTPAID4 11-18-2009, 03:48 PM Think you have any or all of this installed by Saturdays cruise-in in Kannapolis?
I love to see the finished product!! I'm NO good at stereo installs!!!
chithead 11-18-2009, 04:01 PM By the looks of things, I don't think any of it will be in there. Heard it was supposed to rain the rest of the week. But we shall see...
FRESH4849 11-18-2009, 04:39 PM WOW!!! That is gonna be one heck of a system!!! I love music and stereo's and to me the clearer the better. Cant wait to see your final outcome!
You are putting all this under the back seat area? Are you wanting it all to be hidden?
chithead 11-19-2009, 02:10 AM Yes everything will be hidden. The subs are going in a center console. Just the amps and crossover under the rear seat.
chithead 11-19-2009, 12:25 PM Came up with one idea yesterday. Something to mimic this attached design. Thinking the amps will be on each side of the emblem, but there will be edges going up from one end of the amp to the other. Rising almost 3/4" to the center emblem. Then thinking of either a custom Thundercats that lights up, or using one of the Ram Tailgate badges from the 2009 Ram. They are almost 6" tall and would fill up that space nicely.
I like the thundercat idea.having it made into plexiglass with back lighting.then again put the rams head on top with lighting under it.you should see this nissan truck that belongs to one of the installers at the shop i go to.he has his amps molded into the truck doors.you would swear it came that way.if you put your amps under plexi you should put you some exhaust fans in the amp rack.
chithead 11-20-2009, 12:15 PM No I definitely don't want the amps under anything. Actually hoping to have them exposed about a 1/4" on one end, and flush on the other. It should be interesting to say the least.
I know i am waiting to see the out come.i know i am trying to figure out what to do lay out wise in my trunk when we start doing the install.that is still some time away.
chithead 11-21-2009, 11:42 AM I know a great website to give you some inspiration. Definitely helped me in my decision.
chithead 11-21-2009, 02:39 PM Got the baffles cutout and installed this morning, I honestly think these are my best so far:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1064.jpg

chithead 11-21-2009, 02:40 PM A comparison of the new vs stock:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1066.jpg
And installed:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1071.jpg
ZERO issues with the door panel hitting. Had some rubbing with the 8" I installed previously. These have more impact with drums, and more detail with bass guitar and piano. The subwoofer will take care of what little bass that the 8" provided.
Yea link me up that web site.i know i am having the sub box built to hang from the back deck and fire throu the the deck.wow i really like the doors!killer work!
NOTPAID4 11-23-2009, 12:37 AM Man, I can't wait to hear this in your Ram, Daniel!!!
chithead 12-02-2009, 02:07 PM Played around with the DIYMA sub... WOW!!! I have never heard a subwoofer recreate the natural way bass sounds like this monster can. No BOOM BOOM BOOM like most do. It is just clear and clean and hits you like a real drum.
FRESH4849 12-02-2009, 02:08 PM Played around with the DIYMA sub... WOW!!! I have never heard a subwoofer recreate the natural way bass sounds like this monster can. No BOOM BOOM BOOM like most do. It is just clear and clean and hits you like a real drum.
Dang those sound awesome, I might need to invest in some of those
chithead 12-09-2009, 11:24 AM It is simply stunning. Hard to describe the sound it produces. Been listening to a JL Audio 10W3 for about a week now... I like the ability to "show-off" with it, but it definitely does not have that natural bass reproduction like the DIYMA. Looking into a new project though... rebuilding a subwoofer I have laying around the office here. Let's just say it is also by JL, but has the number 7 in it ;)
I hope we run into you at a show this next season.in want to see and hear this bad boy!reading this makes me want my system i am working on in the car now!
chithead 12-11-2009, 05:27 PM I would love to have it done by then too! At least to show everyone that big budget builds are nice, but you can have the same sound (and in some cases a lot more sound) for a much nicer price.
Ordered the voice coil yesterday for the other subwoofer. Will be my first attempt at rebuilding one.
NOTPAID4 12-11-2009, 07:58 PM Oh Man, Daniel, I can't wait to see and hear this "BAD BOY"!!!!!
chithead 12-15-2009, 11:22 AM Wait until you see what direction we are going in this time :D
Here's a teaser:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1078.jpg
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1084.jpg
Looks like some usd speakers some years ago.I am waiting to see this!
chithead 12-16-2009, 10:59 AM Ha! It actually started out as this:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0445.jpg
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_0443.jpg
The magnet had shifted away fromt he top plate and was locked up. I got a pretty good deal on it. Ordered a new voice coil and spider for it, just haven't had time to even attempt to recone a subwoofer myself. Let alone one of the most expensive subs to recone out there.
Last night we had some progress though:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1086.jpg
Chico 12-16-2009, 04:14 PM dude is that the w7 ...?
chithead 12-16-2009, 10:01 PM dude is that the w7 ...?
Indeed it is.
Chico 12-16-2009, 10:17 PM oh man they gona hit lol my brother has 2 of them on his srt magnum boy do they tump
chithead 12-21-2009, 06:52 AM Houston, we had a problem.
But it's fixed. Hoprefully. Got the top plate secured to the motor finally. Took three of us armed with two screwdrivers each to pry that thing into position. VERY strong magnet! Got the basket on, lined up everything, and no go. Coils started reading between 14 and 332 ohms! Finally got that fixed, but still couldn't line up the coil properly. Ended up having to cut the cone to properly align it, and she works! Moves up and down anyways... now to get a dustcap. Maybe I can put the Ram or Mopar logo on it for that ultra custom look.
chithead 12-21-2009, 01:07 PM And here is how she sits as of this morning. Got the coil cover glued back in place, still looking for a good dust cap/cone though. Thinking about one of the flat pistons like Precision and Arc have.
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1092.jpg

Thats freakin cool dude!No doubt i hope to hear your system sometime!
chithead 12-31-2009, 12:49 AM Ordered what I feel is going to be the real winner for subwoofer duty. A JBL W10GTi. Hopefully it will warm up any day now and I can really start on the installation.
Got this in today to play around with, an eD 16ov.2:

chithead 12-31-2009, 02:26 AM You will not be disappointed one bit with Audison and Hertz. VERY impressive companies with amazing attention to detail.
You will not be disappointed one bit with Audison and Hertz. VERY impressive companies with amazing attention to detail.
Yea thats what everyone told me.I met the rep.at a show and he impressed me so much.he went out of his way to explane everything.
MRS.PAID4 R/T 01-03-2010, 07:16 AM Chithead... I like what u did ... very nice!!! I no this thread has been on for a while, but I like tha clean way u did tha insualation I may need your help some time to show me exactly how to put tha insulation in my doors. When I have my verticals up I don't like how my door speakers sound, they seem to have to much rattle in them. Maybe some time in tha future you can give me a heads up on what to do to get a much better sound.
chithead 01-04-2010, 04:01 PM Definitely! You just let me know and we'll meet up again and tackle those doors!
I highly recommend the sound deadener. Even with stock speakers, there is still an improvement in overall sound quality.
chithead 01-16-2010, 03:02 AM I know you are all excited to see this . . . got my christmas present today:

chithead 01-16-2010, 01:45 PM Me too if I ever get it all together!
chithead 02-26-2010, 11:54 PM Change of plans... going for a much simpler install. Got these in the other day:
Boston Acoustics Pro 6.4 component set:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk22/chithead1981/IMG_1161.jpg?t=1267061663

3 Cudas Past 02-27-2010, 12:12 AM Dude!!! what are you doing, your neighbors are not going to be happy! unless of course they like it loud! can't wait to hear it, I need more speakers in the TERMINATOR! and I'm gonna need your help...LOL:smileup:
chithead 02-28-2010, 11:52 AM I can honestly say this should be one of the cleanest sounding setups I have ever heard. If anyone wants a similar setup, there has been some great offers made on Boston Acoustics equipment here lately.
chithead 03-11-2010, 05:13 PM Getting one step closer... fabbing up the subwoofer enclosures. Should be a unique design. I certainly haven't seen it in any other Rams, or any other trucks for that matter!
I have liked those Boston pros since they came out.killer speakers!
chithead 06-11-2010, 01:59 AM Wasn't sure if I updated this thread, and I hadn't.
Plans changed BIG time. Have gone with a set of Rainbow Germanium components, a Focal 33A 13" subwoofer, Soundstream TRA Tarantula amps powering the components and the sub, and a yet to be determined head unit going in. Going to be one massive undertaking, but should definitely make quite an impact.
Sucks I couldn't get any of it in before Gatty... but there is always next year.
imaseahawksfan 06-11-2010, 03:50 AM Look like someones money tree blossomed! I iz jealous!
chithead 06-11-2010, 03:58 AM Ha! You wouldn't believe me if I told you it was cheaper than the Boston setup I had ;)
Reallunacy 06-11-2010, 05:08 AM No, I don't believe it was cheaper lol. What kind of HU are you looking for. I have an Eclipse 7100 that I'm loving. It has 8v pre-outs. The 7200mk is out that from what I hear, is much nicer. The only negative things I've heard out of Eclipse HUs are the UI isn't the most intuitive.
chithead 06-14-2010, 03:00 AM Yes sir! The Rainbows and Focal sub were almost $35 cheaper than the Boston subs and components. And I am loving them much better!
Found an Eclipse AVN5510 head unit that is packed with all the features I would enjoy. Talking the wife into it is the difficult part. Especially since I still need one more amp for the front stage.
ima monsta 06-14-2010, 12:44 PM thats gonna be badass if you put the sub in the center console! i love that look. ive seen it on a couple of cars and damn it looks raw! keep em comin bro!
