View Full Version : Spray tint for your tails??
Cashman 04-07-2011, 04:17 AM Anyone have any experience with the stuff? I want to do mine before the trip to Charleston this coming Saturday but at the same time I dont wanna screw up my lights either lol any tips/tricks to using it? or should I just buy the snap on covers?
FRESH4849 04-07-2011, 04:25 AM I have used it and works well. Just follow the directions and make sure you clean and prep your lights well. Depending on the look you want you can get a can of clear and make them glossy.
SiCKViCC 04-07-2011, 04:54 AM I would go with the covers.. You can do the VHT on your tails but... It wont come off after of course. And it is ilegal in most places if not all. With the covers you can take them on and off when you feel like it.. But if you still feel like the tint spray is the route you wana go then tell me and I can tell you how to do it..
Cashman 04-07-2011, 09:39 PM Well the big thingis I want to mask off the reverse lights and leave them clear on the dark lights so I think the spray is the way I want to go.. so any pointers you have will be greatly appreciated :)

Ok cool. If you dont already know the spray tint is called VHT Niteshade, about 12 or 13 bucks a can at o'rileys or wherever they have it around your area. After you get that spray you need a can of clear coat, and 2000 sandpaper. Then on to the tails. You take them off the car and cover the reverse light, then you wet sand the lights. Clean it off, then pour a little bit of rubbing alcohol on it,Then clean that off. Then you start spraying the vht, Dont do more than three coats or it will be really dark and you wont be able to see out of them. After you apply the vht coats, Hit it with the clear coat, around three coats. Then wait till it dries a while.. Make sure its really dry then wax the tail lights... Ohh and make sure it is NOT windy when you do it or you may get dirt or some other things on it when you tint it..
Here is a video that really helped me when I did my side markers
Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSKA0ElKg1Q

I hope this helps, any more questions then just ask!!
NOTPAID4 04-08-2011, 01:16 AM The VHT is ONE MOD, I never plan on doing. UNLESS someone who knows WAY more about putting it on than ME. Seen too many that looked HORRIBLE!
I supposed IF you know what you are doing; the outcome is really NICE!
BLACKBEAUTY 04-08-2011, 02:52 AM Great vids on the tinting!!
Reps for posting that
TopBananaGuy 04-08-2011, 03:01 AM I almost rear ended a guy the first time I went to the Shindig because of those. We were coming off an exit ramp and the whole line of cars slammed on brakes. I did not realize this because the car in front of me had the brake lights tinted so dark I couldn't see that he had his brakes on. I would be careful how dark you tint them.

Yeah I have done the "oh sh*t he's braking" too. Two coats looks to be the best.

Yeah I've seen it too. That's the other plus to the tint. As long as you use common sense and don't black them out they still stay more functional than the clip ons. I saw a guy with a nice quadcab a couple days ago that had been tinted perfect. They were dark, but still had a red tint to the lenses. I don't want them completely blacked out, just darker than they are. Im ordering trunk blackout today and just think it will carry across the car better with darker tails. Especially on a white car.

So seeing all the mods you are doing I would suggest going with a STORMTROOPER theme. If you did this you would forever be my hero! LOL I believe I have a Charger I have designed on Midnight Club LA for PS3 that is all white and black. Been wanting to do this theme forever but I need a white car and I have no money for that. I need to win the lottery!

That is one of the reason I dont really want to tint my tails. I dont want to get rear ended, but I guess you can probably go with led lights to be sure:smileup::smileup:
but yeah I also think 2 coats would be good...

I like that theme. I tried to catch a charger in mauldin like this a couple days ago. It had a custom front end,and 69 charger looking fenders. It had the whole black/white theme going on.
Deathstar 04-09-2011, 05:53 AM I really like the Stormtrooper theme idea... I don't think I've seen that one yet.
Cashman 04-13-2011, 05:42 PM LOL I was kinda thinking about doing the Stormtrooper thing.. sounds like I may be getting pushed into it lol but for now I have to figure out why one of my lights came our perfect and the tint freaking separated and ran all over the other lens. I must not have gotten all of the prep checmical I used off the plastic before I painted it.. oh well. Good thing I'm off 2 days in a row. I'll have all day to sand it down and try again tomorrow >:(

FRESH4849 04-13-2011, 10:14 PM Tails look great Cash! You did a good job on them
Cashman 04-13-2011, 10:15 PM I also have one more mod to do to my tails once I get paid Friday.. Chris, I hope you dont think i'm tryin to steal your idea but I want to mask mine off the way you did yours, and paint the tops and outer edges white to match the body. The only difference is I'm trying to find some little 1 1/2 or 2 inch mopar "M"s to use as masks for the side markers.. I think it'll be pretty damned sweet!
FlamehedCFH 04-13-2011, 10:18 PM Those look good. 2 coats looks great and are just dark enough.

LMAO Wont be stealing my idea because I got it from some others. haha Only thing with the mod I did that was my original idea was painting the middle flat black. I actually have a picture of another Charger with the same tails that painted them the way I did but painted the whole tail body color....

SiCKViCC 04-14-2011, 02:44 AM Very nice turnout!!! Hmm I wonder how those rims would look blacked out??

Lol funny you should mention that.. it's a future project to hold me over till I get my matte black vipers
FlamehedCFH 04-14-2011, 05:22 AM If you want to practice to see what the R/T rims would look like in matte black, you should look up PlastiDip. Here is a thread on it... http://www.deepsouthmopars.com/showthread.php?t=6162
I want to try it on my SRT wheels. It peels right off if you don't like it.

Simans82 04-14-2011, 06:10 PM The only thing I'd recommend doing after spraying the VHT is to put a coat of clear on it. They look dull, and it becomes really obvious after you put them back on the car next to the glossy paint. I always recommend spraying a nice clear (take them to a shop if you can, sometimes they'll clear them for free if they have a bunch of other projects already lined up for the booth). I've seen some of the aerosol can clears work out okay, but they needed to be buffed to achieve a glossy look. Just my opinion, but you'll be very pleased with the end result if you lay a coat of clear over them.

Actually with the way my car is already started.. with the Daytona flat black hood sticker and spoiler.. the flat look works with what I'm goin for :) thanks for the awesome advice tho :)+
Challngd 05-16-2011, 01:30 AM Lights look good and I like the Stormtrooper theme.
