View Full Version : Well Keon look what you started.
baja73 02-13-2011, 03:53 PM I just did some painting of my own on my gey panels. I'll have to repaint the one under the steering whell since i ran out of clear.
I want to thank Keon for his work. I was going to do it one day but he got me rolling faster.

georgiaslim 02-13-2011, 06:59 PM Awww man, thats looks great. I am liking that. cant wait to get my stuff re-installed.
georgiaslim 02-13-2011, 08:41 PM What kind of paint did you use? SEM?
baja73 02-14-2011, 11:36 AM Well you know i'm cheap. So i'm using flat black walmart spray and krylon satin clear. I'm not sure how it will hold up but the two side trim look really good. I was running out of clear so the one under the dash looks kinda wierd but i stopped last night and got some more clear and i'll try to fix it tonight.
Jettech104 02-14-2011, 12:32 PM Looks good and the best part is that if you get tired of it. You can always paint it again!!!!

Cool, still should hold up. Only reason I went with SEM was because I seen a guy on LXforums do his 300 and it came out great. I have to pick up some more paint and clear today during my lunch break.
Igolo 02-14-2011, 01:35 PM Looks great man!!! Yep, he got me in gear too... I got 3 pcs done this weekend but got a long way to go.
NOTPAID4 02-14-2011, 02:12 PM Looks GREAT!!! How did you prep the plastic????
baja73 02-14-2011, 02:58 PM Looks GREAT!!! How did you prep the plastic????
I'm not sure how Keon is doing his. I just used mineral spirits and rubbed the parts down real good to get them clean.
Igolo 02-14-2011, 03:30 PM I think Keon is using the sem soap and a sem prep before painting.. That's the method I'm using but I'm going to add a step by also using a promotor to help it bond, but it does bond pretty well without it.
shane93nc 02-14-2011, 05:25 PM Looks great. But is the clear really needed?
Igolo 02-14-2011, 06:02 PM I think you could get away without it but it adds another layer of protection. I'd be worried if you were to wipe the parts down that you didn't clear it may show on the color. I'm using a low luster clear and it really doesn't much if any shine to the part.
baja73 02-14-2011, 06:27 PM The satin clear on mine looks like i just put armor all on it. So i hope i stays that way.
baja73 02-17-2011, 11:04 PM Front half of the car is done. I still need to remove the back seat and seat belt to finish the rear trim. Then on to the door panels.
georgiaslim 02-18-2011, 02:55 AM Cool can't wait to see it completed.
Deathstar 02-18-2011, 05:40 AM Looks Great! I know the dash panels and stuff I painted 6 months ago are holding up great, so you should be fine as long as you cleaned everything really well. I hit everything with primer and then used a Rust-o-leum textured spray paint(not too textured, just enough to hide any imperfections, and scratches from feet, and knees. And if I need to touch it up you'll never see it.) from Walmart. I didn't clear it and it all wipes down fine. Still looks as good as the day I painted it.
georgiaslim 02-18-2011, 02:31 PM Im gonna order the xxx adhesion promoter and sand free (adhesion promoter) for the door panels. yes they are both promoters but used a little differently. I will also do 5 coats of paint and clear instead of 3. I know that seems like alot but those door panels will get a lot wear which everyone knows of course.
baja73 02-18-2011, 03:13 PM Yeah i plan on extra coats for the doors also.
baja73 02-23-2011, 01:14 AM I've had some setbacks on this project. After painting and clearing 7 panels with no problem i've hit a speed bump. On the glove box when i sprayed the clear it clouded up and looked like s&^t. So i started over and the second tiem it did it again. I just painted it black and put it in the car with no clear. Tonight i started on the door panels. I had the same issue. The clear is clouding up and looking grey. I'm going to stop afterwork and get some gloss black plastic kote and try it again.
georgiaslim 02-23-2011, 01:18 AM Yeah I had the same thing happen on a few pieces...I noticed it after I put the first coat on. The first coat was perfect but afterwards the coats I layed down had to be very very light.
Igolo 02-23-2011, 01:24 AM Sorry to hear that man... the only thing I've noticed is when you clear you need to lay down a whole coat, not try to spot coat or it will streak on ya.. Hopefully you can get it figured out and get back on track.
georgiaslim 02-23-2011, 01:26 AM We sound like some semi-paint pros ha ha.
Igolo 02-23-2011, 01:29 AM lol...no pro here, fo sure!
baja73 02-23-2011, 01:31 AM If the plastic kote dosn't look like i want it too then i'll have to break out the sprayer. I'm just a lazy ass and don't want to mix paint. And every time i start spraying every one i know show's up wanting something painted.
baja73 02-26-2011, 11:45 PM Door panels are done. I ended up using Krylon for plastic and it worked great.

georgiaslim 02-27-2011, 12:19 AM Looks badass!!!!!!!
baja73 02-27-2011, 01:26 AM Thanks. Tomorrow i'll finish the back pieces. And the end of the dash.
georgiaslim 02-27-2011, 01:29 AM Cool, man. Looks like a totally different car.
baja73 02-27-2011, 01:31 AM Yeah i love the new look. Thanks for giving me a kick start doing yours.
georgiaslim 02-27-2011, 01:33 AM No problem man. Definitely a cheap DIY mod.
baja73 02-27-2011, 01:36 AM Yeah cheap is a key for me right now. I want to change up the seats too but i'll have to wait a while for that.
georgiaslim 02-27-2011, 01:39 AM Yeah I am doing whatever I can myself this year. Spent alot of money last year, so I want to do cheaper mods if not DIY mods.
Igolo 02-27-2011, 02:14 AM Looks good man!! I finished up my panels today, gonna get'em back in the car tomorrow.
baja73 02-27-2011, 05:37 PM I'm done. All painted and put back together. It look's sooo much better i should have done this years ago.
georgiaslim 02-27-2011, 05:56 PM Yeah I have one more coat of clear coat to go on the rear panels.
Igolo 02-27-2011, 08:22 PM I'm back together too!! and your right, I should have done it before now....Next project will be the seats!! lol Always something next...
georgiaslim 02-27-2011, 08:25 PM Yep always something next.
baja73 02-27-2011, 09:54 PM Seats are a must now. But damn they are a lot of money.
Igolo 02-28-2011, 12:59 AM Take a look at this..http://www.custommagnums.com/forums/interior-styling/39724-dark-grey-seats-black-seats.html ... I think I'm gonna give it a try.
georgiaslim 02-28-2011, 01:07 AM I say go for it. I think it will look great. If I didnt buy my covers already I know I would try it.
baja73 02-28-2011, 01:16 AM Looks good on leather. But i have cloth seats maybe it will work out the same. I tryed something like that back in the 90's with a trans am. I wasn't too happy with it then.
Igolo 02-28-2011, 11:00 AM Well I just talked to another guy that just tried it, and he's havin problems, so not sure if I'm gonna give it a try or not....
keeylyme 03-03-2011, 08:05 PM It looks great.
Albino Rhino 03-03-2011, 09:29 PM looks good!!!! I like it
baja73 03-08-2011, 12:33 AM I called the dealer today to see about getting the pins that hold the panels in place. I wanted to get the black ones instead of painting mine. Well they have to order them and want $6 each. That comes out to $72 for all of them so it looks like i'm going to try just painting them.
georgiaslim 03-08-2011, 12:38 AM Holy crap...........yeah I just painted mine. That would have broke your boy heart if they would have told me that ha ha.
baja73 03-08-2011, 12:51 AM Yeah it hurt when they told me that. I've found them cheaper online but i want to get this finished for this weekend in orlando. So i'll be painting some more tomorrow.
georgiaslim 03-08-2011, 12:54 AM Yeah I did the corner of the dash and the front doors today. So I am done with the lower portion of the car!
baja73 03-08-2011, 12:56 AM Are you going to the show in orlando this weekend?
georgiaslim 03-08-2011, 01:01 AM Nope, car wont be ready to show til April. I havent cleaned car thoroughly since January because I am been re-doing everything. Still have a few more mods to complete like installing leather seats, LED lighting, and headrest monitors.
Oh yeah I got my Transformers emblem for the steering wheel put on today. Thanks for the post about that.
