7:22! Dodge Viper ACR slays ZR1, GTR at the 'Ring

And we were there. Here's the inside story.

After Nissan (http://www.motortrend.com/new_cars/01/nissan/index.html) announced in May of this year that its 480-horsepower, all-wheel-drive (http://www.motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0808_2009_dodge_viper_acr_nurburgring_record/index.html#) GT-R lapped Germany's infamous 20.8-km (12.9 miles) Nurburgring Nordschleife in a time of 7:29, Viper people became restless. Then, just a month later, following Chevrolet (http://www.motortrend.com/new_cars/01/chevrolet/index.html)'s declaration that its 638-horsepower supercharged Corvette (http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2010/chevrolet/corvette/index.html) ZR1 was the king of the hill, breaking the GT-R (http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2011/nissan/gt_r/index.html)'s record with a time of 7:26, Viper people became downright mad. Not the folks who work for Dodge (http://www.motortrend.com/new_cars/01/dodge/index.html), mind you, but the members of the Viper Club of America, a group of Viper fanatics that in fact stretches its arms well beyond America, as far as Japan and Germany. Sick and tired of hearing about other cars setting records at the Nordschleife, they wanted to see their pride and joy-namely, Dodge's (http://www.motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0808_2009_dodge_viper_acr_nurburgring_record/index.html#) new track-attacking 600-horsepower Viper ACR (American Club Racer)-take a shot at the record books. But what could they do about it?

http://static.motortrend.com/_SiteConfigs/motortrend_com/images/no_photo_100px.gif (http://www.motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0808_2009_dodge_viper_acr_nurburgring_record/photo_02.html)http://static.motortrend.com/_SiteConfigs/motortrend_com/images/no_photo_100px.gif

Well, they could (and did) bug Dodge-specifically, the Street & Racing Technology (http://www.motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0808_2009_dodge_viper_acr_nurburgring_record/index.html#) team-to the point that SRT said, What the heck, let's go for it. So SRT rented the Nordschleife for a half-day (at a cost of $2000 Euro per hour), shipped two ACRs over to Germany, hired a pro driver through Zakspeed (a race team that runs Vipers in the ADAC Zurich 24h Race at the Nurburgring), and hoped for good weather and, more important, a lap time quicker than 7:26. And, for posterity, the SRT team figured having a media outlet on-hand was a wise idea, so they invited Motor Trend, and yours truly was fortunate enough to get the call.

Coronel puts down the best time of the day, a 7:22.1, slicing over four seconds from the ZR1's time. It's not a sub-7:20, but it'll more than do. Per Shinedling, "Had we shortened the gearing and had more than a day to develop the car (http://www.motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0808_2009_dodge_viper_acr_nurburgring_record/breaking_the_record.html#) for the Nordshcleife, we probably could have dipped below 7:20, but we're very happy with our time, nonetheless." So is Coronel, who suggests the team celebrate with a round of beer at the famous Pistenklause restaurant.

I got ya....Yeah it has that launch control and all the driver aids that make it killer fast in a quarter mile for sure. But that is one reason I really like the Viper besides it's a Dodge is there are no driver aids, you have to drive this beast.

Don't get me wrong, the Viper is an awesome car.......

With Chevy coming out with the ZR-1, I figured if they made this Viper, we could consider it its arch nemesis:box2:

Yeah I agree, but I do hope they don't put any driver aids on the next generation Viper like Chevy did the ZR1.

Not sure if the controls are the same on the Z06 but I have tried to launch my fathers in any mode and its tough as hell. Personally, I think the video had a very veteran driver to pull that off..... 1.7 60ft on street tires is incredible. Now Im curious what slicks would do...... I see a 10.5 or quicker with stickies....

I wouldn't mind the Viper having those options, as long as you are able to turn eveything completely off

Yeah I can tell he was very good at slipping the clutch out and apply throttle at the same time, but he had to have some assistance with the aids cause I have seen before at Zmax dragway the ZR1's without aids and the driver slipping the clutch still spin through 1st but hit 2nd and there gone.

But that is a incredible run no doubt, with slicks would be crazy fast.

We have one in Greer S.C.,but it's only a 1/8th mile which is a joke.

But we have Commerce GA. and Zmax in Charlotte they both will let stockers run on certain Saturdays of the month.

So we will have to look at their schedule and pick a good Saturday to do the event.

Also a member of the upstate chapter says he knows of a place that does time trials on a old runway here in S.C. and it's a mile long, now that's what I am talking about.

The ZR-1 is a beautiful car. Saw one a couple of weeks ago at a Chevy dealer. Sticker was $125,000

Personally I'd take that Viper though.

just watched that video on mototrend of the viper going around the Nurburgring. that was simply too cool. but sounded like crap, at 4:35 sounds like he ran over something huge and tore off the oil pan, still he was averaging 105mph around that thing, not too shabby

Those V-10's do sound funny to me. I had the SRT-10 Ram and they remind me of a 6 cylinder. Sound wise that is, torque is crazy with those engines.

I really like the looks of the car in the video. Better enjoy the video because that's probably the only time you'll see that one.

I really like the ZR-1 Vette also.Crazy factory street car. If I had to chose, I'd go with the Viper or Ford GT (not mustang) just because you don't see them everyday. Corvettes are pretty common. Not the ZR-1 so much, but you really can't tell alot of difference from the outside.
