View Full Version : Nooo.... Charger down!!!!
Gurry624 05-31-2009, 10:01 PM So my Charger started acting stupid the other day. I was drivin and then all the brake lights on the dash came on. The ESP/BAS, the emergency brake, the check engine light, and the battery light. I changed the alternator, i changed the battery as well... changed it to an Optima Yellow Top. It worked for a litttle while but it happened again. Basically, the car is draining the battery and I don't know why. Anyone got any ideas??
I hope to get my car fixed before the 13th M&G, and before Scrapin the Coast since my car is registed in the show.
TreborRT 05-31-2009, 10:10 PM is the line running from the alternator bad? could be that no power is being sent back to the battery so it just drains itself.
MHemi 05-31-2009, 10:12 PM Do you have any after market equipment installed? sounds like a dead short to me.
RedInfierno 05-31-2009, 10:14 PM sounds like a short, that sucks bro, i hope you get it fixed soon...

That is a possibility. A couple months ago I melted the alternator wire due to a broken motor mount. My friends and I cut and spliced wire in to make it up and it worked. Dealership didn't even notice it. Had to bring it to the dealer cause the melted wire hit the block and fried my CPU.

The only thing I got aftermarket that requires wires are my strobe lights. They are pretty well wired but they also are a little Jerry Rigged. So, also a possibility.
MHemi 05-31-2009, 10:25 PM Nothing like a multi-meter for times like these! good luck
OverCharged 05-31-2009, 11:20 PM sucks man. hope you get it fixed in tome for the m&g
miamimel 05-31-2009, 11:25 PM Id second that motion and say it a short, that multimeter is gonna help you narrow it down. Hope you get it fixed man and good luck.
gecko4012 05-31-2009, 11:42 PM Yeah definitely sounds like a short.

Just curious on the splicing method used. Did you solder the wire at the spilce and shrink wrap? This could very well be the issue, I learned a lot about auto wiring on my Camaro after the tack quit working and found every single wire in at the fuse block was naked from heating up.
Previous owner spliced in a bunch of sterieo equipment and it wound up requiroing me to rewire the whole car. Fortunetly I found it as it was only a total disaster in the making.
Any way, I met up with an automotive wiring genious from Cali who taught me things I would never learn on my own about auto wiring and the correct way of doing it.

Good Luck hope you can find the isue soon.
Gurry624 06-01-2009, 02:09 AM My connections weren't shrink wrapped but the whole section that we wired was heavily wrapped with electrical tape.
Drill Daddy 06-01-2009, 02:40 AM Good luck man!!! Being a mechanic there is nothing worse than having to troubleshoot an electrical problem. It probably is something real simple to fix.
Good luck with the repair. I'd replace the repaired cable first.

Did you solder the connection prior to wrapping?
If you have not found the issue, I would start by replacing the wire that has been damaged and repaired. There are many electrical gremlins with repairs and especially dealing with the charging system.
Go to madelectrical.com (MAD Enterprises) if you have not found the issue, give Mark a call and explain what problems you have, what you have done.
This guy is the go to man on auto electrical. He should be able to help resolve the problem for you.
Good luck.
Gurry624 06-02-2009, 05:22 AM I talked to a guy I used to work with, and he knows a guy who works at the Dodge dealership by my house and he said that the charging system is controlled by the CPU. So if the CPU says to piss off, then the car won't charge. So there is another issue that could be my problem, since I fried my PCM about 7 months ago and had it replaced.
RedInfierno 06-02-2009, 12:05 PM fried PCM ouch! i hope you get everything solved soon bro...
426hemicuda 06-02-2009, 01:16 PM DAAAANG! Keep us posted on this one dude!

I had a 1984 vette that became a huge Carbeque on the jersey tpk
It had serious electrical problems!:D
Gurry624 06-04-2009, 03:28 AM I couldn't figure it out on my own, so it got sent to the dealer. I stopped by earlier and it was on the rack, but they hadn't figured the problem yet. HOWEVER, I must say, my car looks pretty damn sexy on the lift. LOL. I will let ya'll know as soon as I do, about what they say
RedInfierno 06-04-2009, 10:33 AM keep up posted gurry!
Gurry624 06-05-2009, 05:46 PM A little update bout my Charger. The dealership called me yesterday and told me that my wiring harness was burnt through, I need a new one. A new wiring harness + install = $1500 to start. Then we find out if any components have been hurt.
RedInfierno 06-05-2009, 05:56 PM holy crap batman! is that covered under your warranty or what? what caused that problem?
Gurry624 06-05-2009, 06:29 PM i doubt it would of been covered. But i'm far out of my warranty period. it's an '06 with appx. 90,000 miles on it. This is gonna be cash outta pocket.

Gurry624 06-06-2009, 01:31 PM I hate the dealership. They called me on Thursday to tell me about my harness, i said i'd call them back. I called badk a little ahile later and my service guy was out to lunch so the guy i talked said he would give him the message to go ahead on my car. I called back yesterday to see how long it will take but my guy was out sick. I called back again this morning to talk to my guy and he said he never got the messge and can't order the part till monday, so thats like 5 extra days I have to wait. I hate dealerships.
Nolaboi86 06-06-2009, 10:34 PM Damn I agree dealerships are really a mess they had my car for 3weeks. Hope you get your ride straight and soon.... keep us posted
RedInfierno 06-07-2009, 04:13 AM Thats messed up! i hate dealing with dealers too, i dont really get my car get serviced at the dealer but when i bought my car man! i was about to walk away with my old vehicle, looong story!
Gurry624 06-07-2009, 03:03 PM when it comes time to gettin my car back, i'm gonna try to raise a little hell to see if the guy can work with me on the price. Havin to wait like 5 or 4 extra days because of one of the lame ass service reps is just complete bullshit

I normally do most work on my own. But i couldn't figure out what was wrong. I replaced the battery and the alternator before i brought the car to the dealership. but both fixes didn't fix the problemso had to bring it in
Dang, man. That totally sucks ass. Sorry about that. Hoe you get it fixed up soon. That is a lot of money.
Gurry624 06-11-2009, 04:59 PM Good news everybody. Got my car back yesterday. Runs like a champ, not really, but it runs like the day it broke, only better. lol. She needs an oil change and more than likely a tranny fluid change. Probably woulnd't hurt to check the air filter and the spark plugs too. WOW, I guess i could have just said a tune up, but whatever. lol
Anyway, she will be at the Biloxi, HOOTERS M&G, and she will be at Scrapin' The Coast as well
See ya'' saturday
RustyNail 06-11-2009, 05:28 PM Sweet! Glad she's running. Should run better after the tune up!
RedInfierno 06-12-2009, 12:21 AM im glad u got her back and running! now just get a tune up and that thats it!
